Mediation FAQs > Family Mediation > When and Why should we use 2 mediators instead of 1?
Because of our roster of mediators, NVMS is able to offer potential participants with a slightly different process than what you may have seen on television or heard about from friends. This process is called co-mediation.
Co-mediation occurs whenever we use a team of two mediators instead of just one. Whenever we use two mediators, we always gender balance so that there is one male mediator and one female mediator. This does not mean that each party gets their own mediator who represents their interests and argues on their behalf like an advocate would in a court room. Instead, those two mediators work together to focus on your issues, concerns and potential resolutions.
The reason that we use two mediators is that both the research being conducted by experts in ADR and the feedback we’ve gotten from actual participants has been a remarkably different outcome than solo mediation. Whenever parties use two mediators, they feel more comfortable with the process, felt more satisfied, felt that the communication flow was far better and in many instances led to an increased chance of reaching an agreement. It is especially helpful in more difficult situations that can be discussed and explained by the case coordinator.
