NVMS Community Spotlight: Good Samaritan Advocates

The Good Samaritan Advocates (GSA) is a Christian-based attorney network, which helps individuals and families in the Northern Virginia and suburban Maryland area that cannot afford to hire an attorney or get the assistance they need. This team of pro bono attorneys believes that every individual has the right to equal access of justice. They provide legal advice to people with any or no faith background, any immigration status and who speak any language (they ask for individuals to bring an interpreter, if needed). This legal aid organization includes clinic attorneys, referral attorneys and non-lawyer volunteers.

GSA holds three clinics every month. On the first Saturday of the month the clinic is held in Fairfax County, on the second Saturday in Montgomery County and on the third, in Loudoun County. Present at these clinics are intake coordinators and 2-3 attorneys who provide one hour consultations.

The GSA attorneys help individuals understand their legal rights, explain basic legal concepts or documents, provide advice on negotiating a dispute, recommend next steps, help individuals prepare for a hearing, and refer those in need to other legal resources. The GSA cannot guarantee representation during a court case, nor can they respond to time-sensitive emergencies. An appointment is necessary to meet with an attorney.
